Tropic Greenery is Lagoon Friendly!

Tropic Greenery has practiced Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the past ten years. IPM is a program that reduces the number of over applied harmful chemicals that runoff into our Estuaries, by using “spot treatment”, while still maintaining a quality appearance of the property. Now that our Estuaries are suffering more than ever it is very important to us to team up with local residents in our area to work together, to not only promote, but practice the newest and most effective ways to save our beautiful environment by using the Lagoon Friendly Lawns Program.

We believe in the long run would be well worth it to be one of the first local residents to care enough to execute a plan to bring our estuaries back to the healthy ecosystem they once were. The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most biologically diverse estuaries in North America, providing a home for more than 4,000 species.

There are four core concepts in the Keep Brevard Beautiful new Lagoon Friendly Lawns Program that we can use for guidelines to overcome this challenge.

  • First, minimize nutrient pollution by making sure we follow all local fertilizer ordinances and applying Phosphorous only if a soil test shows it’s needed. Also, we can be sure to keep lawn clippings off of impervious surfaces like cement and out of water bodies and storm drains.
  • Second, is reducing the amount of turf grass on your property to minimize nutrient inputs, creating larger garden beds, and mulching flower beds with sustainable mulch types that don’t contribute to deforestation which can also minimize maintenance.
  • Third, reduce storm water runoff by minimizing impervious surfaces such as, poured concrete with surfaces that allow water to flow through the ground.
  • Fourth, basing your landscape on native plant communities provides food and habitat for wildlife, plus native plants are adapted to our area, meaning they don’t require as much watering or fertilizer.
